A £10,000 target to raise money in honour of the late David Benjamin – the much-loved Ambleside estate agent who died last year aged just 53 – was smashed by family members and friends.
More than 70 took part in the Great North Swim as part of Team David Benjamin to raise money for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation based in Preston, and more than £20,000 was raised.
It is believed the team, led by David’s widow Deborah and her sons James, Alex and Oliver, was the biggest fundraising team to take part in the annual swim on Windermere, which this year attracted around 10,000 swimmers. It is Europe’s largest open-water swimming event.
The fundraising continued at Ambleside Rugby Club after the swim and many local people and groups gave their time free or donated prizes and/or refreshments to make the night a success.
David’s two estate agencies – Matthews Benjamin and Fine & Country Lakes and North Lancs, which have offices in Ambleside, Windermere, Kendal and Lancaster – are also supporting Rosemere, with £100 from the sale of each house going directly to the charity.
